ચમત્કારી છપ્પો અને ગાંધીજી! જાન્યુઆરી 30, 2007

આજે મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીની પુણ્યતિથિ પર એમના જ સિધ્ધાંતોને યાદ કરવા કરતાં પણ અધિક અંજલિ બીજી કઇ હોઇ શકે? ગાંધીજીના જીવનમાં નીતિ અને સત્યને ઘોળવામાં એક છપ્પાએ અગત્યનો ભાગ ભજવેલો, જે હું એમનાં જ શબ્દોમાં અહીં ટાંકુ છું.

“મનુસ્મૃતિ વાંચી હું એ વેળાએ અહિંસા તો ન જ શીખ્યો. માંસાહારની વાતને … તો મનુસ્મૃતિનો ટેકો મળ્યો. સર્પાદિ અને માંકડ આદિને મારવા એ નીતિ છે એમ પણ લાગ્યું. એ સમયે ધર્મ ગણી માંકડ આદિનો નાશ કર્યાનું મને સ્મરણ છે.
પણ એક વસ્તુએ જડ ઘાલી — આ જગત નીતિ ઉપર નભેલું છે. નીતિમાત્રનો સમાવેશ સત્યમાં છે. સત્ય તો શોધવું જ રહ્યું. દિવસે દિવસે સત્યનો મહિમા મારી નજર આગળ વધતો ગયો. સત્યની વ્યાખ્યા વિસ્તાર પામતી ગઇ અને હજુ પામતી રહી છે.
વળી એક નીતિનો છપ્પો પણ હ્રદયમાં ચોંટ્યો. અપકારનો બદલો અપકાર નહીં પણ ઉપકાર જ હોઇ શકે એ વસ્તુ જિંદગીનું સૂત્ર બની ગઇ. તેણે મારી ઉપર સામ્રાજ્ય ચલાવવું શરૂ કર્યું. અપકારીનું ભલું ઇચ્છવું ને કરવું એ મારો અનુરાગ થઇ પડ્યો. તેના અગણિત અખતરાઓ આદર્યા. આ રહ્યો એ ચમત્કારી છપ્પો:
પાણી આપને પાય, ભલું ભોજન તો દીજે;
આવી નમાવે શીશ, દંડવત કોડે કીજે.
આપણ ઘાસે દામ, કામ મહોરોનું કરીએ;
આપ ઉગારે પ્રાણ, તે તણા દુ:ખમાં મરીએ.
ગુણ કેડે તો ગુણ દશ ગણો, મન, વાચા, કર્મે કરી;
અવગુણ કેડે જે ગુણ કરે, તે જગમાં જીત્યો સહી.
… ”
આ છપ્પો કયા કવિનો છે, એ વિશે ગાંધીજીએ એમનાં પુસ્તકમાં કોઇ ઉલ્લેખ કર્યો નથી!

I was ten years old when Gandhiji was assasinated. I remember how much crying and weeping occurred all over the country. If there was a way to measure the volume of tears shed by the people of a country after the death of a leader, Mahatma Gandhi would be at the top for the 20th Century. The expression of sorrow and grief by the ordinary people was beyond description. I have not seen such an event until now any where in the world.
Secondly, I marvel how in the time with no internet, no cell phone, no fax or xerox machines, Mahatma Gandhi mobilized the whole country and sent his message across entire India? In those days even the transportation was slow! I also admire his principles more and more the older I get. I take great pride that I come from a country that produced Mahatma Gandhi! A remarkable thing is that he never compromised on his principles during his entire life.
I am sad to say that while the world has discovered Gandhi in last two decades, he is almost forgotten in India. New generation in India knows very little about Gandhi and what he did for India.

‘અપકારનો બદલો અપકાર નહીં પણ ઉપકાર જ હોઇ શકે એ વસ્તુ જિંદગીનું સૂત્ર બની ગઇ.’
ઉપકારમાં જ્યારે નિ:સ્વાર્થ ભાવના અને નિષ્કામ કર્મ નો ઉમેરો થાય છે, બદલામાં કોઈ પણ જાતની અપેક્ષા રહેતી નથી અને સાત્વિક પણ અખંડ આનંદ રેલાય છે ત્યારે એ નીતિમાં રહેલો સત્યનો પાયો વધુ ને વધુ મજબુત બનતો જાય છે જે આપણી નૈતિક હિંમત ને કોઈપણ પરિસ્થિતિ માં ટકાવી રાખવા સમર્થ બની જાય છે. ગાંધીજી નાં આ વિચારોનો આપણે એક નાનકડો અંશ પણ અમલમાં મુકીએ તો કદાચ આ દુનિયા માં વિશ્વશાંતિ, અહિંસા અને પ્રેમ વધે. નાના પ્રાણીઓ પણ કોઈ પણ જાત ના ભય વગર હરીફરી શકે અને ‘માંસાહાર’ કાયમ ને માટે આ વિશ્વ માંથી વિદાય લે.

Hello Dinesh Uncle,
I dont think Gandhi is so easily forgettable. There are very few people who will remain in hearts of people for centuries or beyond (Gandhi, Mahavir, Krishna, Ram, Buddha)
The striking similarity between all great people is that they remain grounded & followed the basic principles of life (what can be called “Dharm”)
And lets assume that people will forget Gandhi, but what about thoughts? I think thoughts remain forever, noble thoughts.
If you see movies – a recent example could be “Lage Raho Munnabai”. This movie brings Gandhi to ordinary people & shows them what he stood for.
